FAQs

Who Owns the "Turkish Center” (“Turk Evi”)?

Turk Evi has been purchased and owned by Florida Turkish Center Foundation, Inc (Turk Evi Vakfi) which is a non-profit Florida organization. Contrary to unfounded rumors, it is not owned by any individual or group of individuals. The Foundation purchased 2 adjacent spaces (the first space had 3 units, the second space had 2 units) total of 5 units in the Tides building. Turk Evi ownership information can be viewed at Broward County government’s on line public property records by clicking on the following links:

It is true that, in the absence of financing available through commercial banks, Foundation (Vakif) obtained financing from various individuals. Obtaining financing from individuals and mortgaging a property is not any different than borrowing from a commercial bank, with the exception that, the private financing provided by these individuals were at extremely favorable terms (terms no financial institution can match), for which South Florida Turkish Community is eternally grateful.

In summary, Turk Evi cannot be owned by individuals or group of individuals. This is mandated and guaranteed by its foundation (vakif) status and its Bylaws that cannot be changed (which can be viewed by clicking on the "Bylaws" link on the left).
